ABIM slams Philippine senator’s call to revive Sabah claim as irresponsible provocation that threatens ASEAN stability and sovereignty principles.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) has strongly condemned a Philippine senator’s call to revive claims over Sabah.
ABIM vice-president Salman Mohd Yusop described the statement by Senator Robin Padilla as an irresponsible political provocation that could undermine regional stability.
He stressed that Sabah is a legitimate and indisputable territory of Malaysia.
Its status was finalised through a lawful historical process and international recognition.
“Any attempt to question Sabah’s sovereignty is completely unacceptable and must be firmly rejected by all parties,” Salman said in a statement.
ABIM described efforts to revive the claim as a regressive move challenging national sovereignty.
It said the move violates the spirit of understanding among ASEAN member states.
Salman said the statement is concerning as the Philippines currently holds the ASEAN Chairmanship.
He clarified that the remarks do not represent the official stance of the Philippine government or ASEAN.
“Failure to clearly distance and correct such narratives risks undermining regional leadership credibility,” he said.
It could create a perception that ASEAN’s core principles are being eroded.
Salman stressed that linking territorial sovereignty with resource interests like oil is a dangerous approach.
He said it opens the door to opportunistic politics that could trigger geopolitical tensions.
ABIM urged the Malaysian government to adopt a firmer stance in defending national sovereignty.
It called for action through principled diplomatic channels.
Salman said the Philippine government, as ASEAN Chair, bears responsibility to correct such statements.
This is necessary to preserve the values of justice, peace and mutual respect among nations.
The Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) Youth wing also condemned the senator’s statement.
It described the call as contrary to the principles of sovereignty and international law.
Acting PGRS Youth chief Azrul Ibrahim called the statement irresponsible.
He said it appears to be an attempt to divert attention from the Philippines’ domestic issues.
“Sabah is not a commodity to resolve other countries’ problems, but a sovereign state within Malaysia that must be respected by all parties,” Azrul said.
He urged the people of Sabah to remain united in defending the state’s sovereignty.
