ABIM proposes an inter-ministerial committee to create national guidelines for community events on sensitive topics to prevent public confusion.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) has proposed the government establish an inter-ministerial committee to draft national guidelines for community events involving sensitive issues.
ABIM president Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin said this move is crucial to strengthen governance and avoid public confusion following programmes that use sensitive approaches or branding.
The proposed guidelines would cover branding aspects, programme content, transparency of registered associations’ mandates, and compliance with public values.
It also includes clearer regulatory requirements for closed, overnight programmes and those themed around health or social issues with potential moral implications.
“This move is not aimed at restricting civic space or punishing any party, but rather as a preventive and prudent governance approach,” Ahmad Fahmi said in a statement.
He stated the aim is to ensure public health issues are not misused as a gateway to advocacy contradicting societal foundations and the Federal Constitution.
In Malaysia’s multicultural context, he said public health approaches must consider sociocultural realities, religious norms, and existing legal frameworks.
This ensures the delivered message remains focused on public well-being, according to Ahmad Fahmi.
The proposal follows media reports that the “Glamping With Pride” event organisers would proceed despite opposition.
That programme is described as a private, community-based retreat focused on wellbeing, peer support and health awareness.
