KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim joined a community walkabout at the Gaya Street morning market here this morning.

He arrived at 8.35 am and was greeted by Kota Kinabalu City Hall Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah along with market visitors.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud also accompanied the Prime Minister.

Anwar spent approximately one hour interacting with traders and visitors after receiving a briefing from city officials.

The market, popularly known as Tamu Gaya Street, attracts both local residents and tourists every Sunday.

Visitor Robert Lius, 56, expressed his fortune at unexpectedly meeting the Prime Minister during his family shopping trip.

“I came with my family to shop and did not know the Prime Minister would be here,” he said.

“I feel lucky to have met him.”

The Sunday market operates weekly from 7 am to 1 pm featuring fresh produce, clothing, antiques and local handicrafts.

Following his market visit, Anwar enjoyed nasi lemak at a nearby restaurant before proceeding to officiate the Rancakkan MADANI Sabah programme at Sabah International Convention Centre. – Bernama
