Schitt’s Creek, Home Alone star Catherine O’Hara dies at 71

Canadian comedy icon Catherine O’Hara, known for Schitt’s Creek and Home Alone, has died at her Los Angeles home, prompting tributes from co-stars and leaders.

LOS ANGELES: Catherine O’Hara, the celebrated Canadian comic actor, has died at the age of 71.

A representative from her manager’s office confirmed her death, which followed a brief illness at her Los Angeles home.

O’Hara won the 2020 Emmy for best comedy actress for her role as Moira Rose in the hit series “Schitt’s Creek.”

She was also widely beloved for playing Kate McCallister, the frantic mother in the classic film “Home Alone.”

Her “Home Alone” co-star Macaulay Culkin led tributes on social media, posting a heartfelt message alongside photos of them together.

“I thought we had time. I wanted more,” Culkin wrote on Instagram. “I love you. I’ll see you later.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed mourning on behalf of the nation and her global fans.

Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called her a “beloved Canadian icon with a rare gift for comedy and heart.”

O’Hara was born in Toronto on March 4, 1954, and began her career with the improvisational troupe The Second City in 1974.

She became a star on the sketch comedy show “SCTV,” which launched two years after she joined the troupe.

Her prolific voice acting work included roles in “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “The Wild Robot.”

She recently joined the cast of Seth Rogen’s upcoming 2025 Hollywood satire series, “The Studio.”

O’Hara also took on dramatic roles, such as in the 1997 film “Hope.”

She is survived by her husband, production designer Bo Welch, and their two sons. – Reuters
