Anwar outlines leadership vision focused on integrity and economic reforms

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stresses integrity, anti-corruption, and people-centred economic policies as core leadership principles in a recent interview.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has outlined a leadership vision anchored in integrity, a firm anti-corruption stance, and economic policies addressing the people’s real problems.

He stressed that such leadership must remain connected to the masses and their daily struggles, particularly regarding the cost of living and basic salaries.

Anwar said this must be maintained even as the government undertakes institutional reforms.

Speaking in an interview with Turkish broadcaster TRT World, he noted the need for collective engagement within his coalition administration.

“Now remember, we are in a coalition. I’m not a dictator, so I have to engage well on issues,” he said.

He envisions a leader who does not enrich himself, takes a minimum salary, holds a strong position against corruption, and focuses on propelling the economy.

Anwar warned that reforms cannot be rushed without considering lessons from other countries.

He cautioned that neglecting bread-and-butter issues could backfire due to high public expectations.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the challenge of acting against powerful corrupt figures with significant resources and influence.

He noted these individuals wield power across media, the judiciary, and enforcement agencies.

Anwar added that he faced sustained attacks and accusations questioning his reformist credentials during his first year in office.

The government recently announced a second wave of reforms including freedom of information and an ombudsman.

It also set a fixed tenure for the prime minister as part of these institutional changes.

Anwar pointed to the Fiscal Responsibility Act as a significant step towards accountability.

“Can you imagine a Minister of Finance surrendering the entire power to Parliament? It’s not easy. Easier said than done. But you have to do it,” he said.
