Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirms Tengku Zafrul Aziz will get a new government position after his senatorship ends, with announcement scheduled for December 3.
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will announce the new role for outgoing investment, trade and industry minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz on Wednesday.
Speaking after Perodua’s first electric vehicle launch, Anwar confirmed Tengku Zafrul still has responsibilities to fulfil beyond his ministerial term.
“He cannot just let it go,” Anwar told reporters.
“His last day is Dec 2, and he will continue working after that.”
The prime minister specifically stated he would make the announcement on December 3.
Government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil previously indicated Tengku Zafrul would maintain a government role after his senatorship concludes.
Tengku Zafrul’s two-term senatorship began in December 2020 and received renewal last year.
Last month, the minister offered to assist his successor upon his senatorship expiration.
He informed Anwar of his availability and awaited decisions on the ministry’s future leadership.
Malaysian constitution requires cabinet members to be elected members of parliament.
Tengku Zafrul cannot remain in cabinet without winning a parliamentary seat in future elections.
