ASEAN tourism demand resilient despite geopolitical headwinds

ASEAN tourism remains robust amid global tensions, with Malaysia focusing on digital and sustainable growth to support its vital travel ecosystem

KUALA LUMPUR: Tourism demand across ASEAN nations remains strong despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, according to Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man.

He said this underscores a persistent desire to travel and the industry’s capacity to adapt to changing preferences and circumstances. Travellers continue to show significant interest in exploring destinations both locally and abroad, particularly within the ASEAN region.

“At the same time, the government remains committed to supporting the country’s tourism ecosystem through our policies and initiatives that encourage digital adoption and sustainable tourism practices,” Chiew said at the prospectus launch for outbound travel experience curator Golden Destinations Group Bhd.

He noted that more recent geopolitical developments have created new uncertainties, testing the sector’s resilience once again. The government will continue to focus on policy support while championing digitally efficient and sustainable practices.

“We must notice that the global travel landscape has been excellent,” Chiew stated.

He highlighted the industry’s journey from the unprecedented disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic to current geopolitical uncertainties. These headwinds would have stalled less resilient sectors, yet Malaysia is witnessing remarkable momentum.

Chiew also emphasised that tourism has long been a cornerstone of Malaysia’s economic identity. Beyond its direct impact on gross domestic product, the industry supports a vast interconnected network spanning transportation, hospitality, and retail.

Crucially, the backbone of this ecosystem is Malaysia’s small and medium enterprises, including tour operators, travel agencies, and local guides. “These businesses are the lifeblood of the travel revolution, ensuring that Malaysia remains competitive on the global stage,” he added.
