Boy dies in crash, driver positive for cannabis

A 10-year-old boy died while three others were injured in a three-vehicle crash near Kampar, with the driver testing positive for cannabis.

IPOH: A 10-year-old boy died while three others were injured in a crash involving three vehicles at Kilometre 29.4 of the Ipoh-Kuala Lumpur road near Kampar last night.

Kampar district police chief Supt Mohamad Nazri Daud said the victim was identified as Jayden Leong Zhi Yung from Taman Perpaduan Koperasi, here.

He said police received information about the incident from members of the public at about 10.35 pm.

“Preliminary investigations had found that a Toyota Hilux driven by a 44-year-old man from Ipoh heading towards Kampar is believed to have lost control upon reaching the scene before veering into the opposite lane and colliding with a Perodua Bezza and a Perodua Myvi,” he said in a statement today.

He added that a urine screening test conducted on the Toyota Hilux driver found that the man tested positive for cannabis and he had been detained to assist investigations under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving causing death.

Mohamad Nazri said the deceased, who was the front passenger of the Perodua Bezza, was pronounced dead at the scene with severe head and leg injuries.

He said the victim’s sister, Jeno Leong Zhi Yung, 13, who was seated at the rear of the Perodua Bezza, and their father, Leong Hon Kin, 46, also sustained head and leg injuries and were taken to Kampar Hospital for treatment.

“The 23-year-old Perodua Myvi driver and the Toyota Hilux driver did not suffer any physical injuries,” he added.
