Chinese tourist feared drowned while swimming in Langkawi

A 49-year-old Chinese national is missing and feared drowned after swimming at Pantai Tanjung Rhu in Langkawi, with search operations ongoing.

ALOR SETAR: A Chinese national is feared drowned after going missing while swimming at Pantai Tanjung Rhu in Langkawi.

The 49-year-old man was swimming with his son yesterday when the boy noticed his father had disappeared.

The son only saw the man’s hat floating on the water, according to Langkawi Zone 4 chief of the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department, Mohd Zamri Abd Ghani.

The boy immediately informed their hotel, which then contacted the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

The agency subsequently alerted the fire department to initiate a search and rescue operation.

Mohd Zamri said they received the emergency call at 8.43pm.

Langkawi Fire and Rescue personnel arrived at the scene 15 minutes later to assess the situation.

They began searching the waters where the victim was last seen.

“The operation is ongoing, with constant monitoring of the waves, currents, and the safety of personnel,” Mohd Zamri said in a statement today.

He added that the victim has not been found so far.

Updates will be provided as the search continues.
