Christmas in Malaysia showcases unity and multicultural joy

Christmas celebrations across Malaysia highlight the nation’s spirit of unity, bringing together families, neighbours and international visitors in shared joy.

KUALA LUMPUR: Christmas celebrations across Malaysia have become a powerful symbol of the nation’s multiracial unity and resilient spirit.

For physician Dr Christinna Vanathyar, 39, the day is a profound source of happiness and a cherished family occasion.

“We are truly overjoyed to be together with our entire family to mark the birth of Jesus Christ,” she told Bernama.

Her family traditions include decorating the Christmas tree, baking seasonal treats and welcoming guests with an array of local dishes.

Freelancer James Vanathaiya Anthony, 62, noted the celebrations were enriched by the joyful participation of friends and neighbours from all communities.

“We aren’t just celebrating one festival—we’re celebrating all of them together,” he said.

The occasion offers a dual experience as a local tradition for family reunions and a vibrant multicultural event for visitors.

Irish visitor Julia Power, 65, described her first Malaysian Christmas as distinct yet deeply meaningful.

She was deeply impressed by the spirit of unity she witnessed among people of diverse backgrounds at Christmas Mass.

For Filipina housemaid Lourads Malver, 63, celebrating Christmas in Malaysia for the past 15 years has become a cherished tradition.

“I’m happy to celebrate Christmas here. Malaysia feels like home to me,” said Lourads.
