Cops nab man alleged to have fatally beaten wife with dumbbell out of jealousy

SHAH ALAM: Police have arrested a man alleged to have fatally beaten his wife with a dumbbell out of jealousy in an incident at a house on Jalan Sungai Congkak, Shah Alam, early yesterday.

Shah Alam District Police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim (pix) said the police initially received a report at 5.33 am from the suspect claiming that his wife had a seizure and subsequently took her to Shah Alam Hospital as she was unconscious.

He said an examination by the doctor found that the 33-year-old woman had injuries in several parts of her body, and further investigation revealed that the victim was beaten by the suspect at their home out of jealousy before being taken to the hospital.

Acting on the information, he said the police nabbed the 38-year-old man at the Shah Alam Hospital, and the dumbbell believed to have been used to beat his wife was also seized.

“The couple had just been married in April 2023 and did not have any children. The deceased worked as an educator at a college in Sarawak and had returned for vacation to attend a family member’s wedding,“ he said in a statement yesterday.

He said the suspect, who is self-employed, has two criminal records related to assault and drugs, and a screening test found him positive for drugs. He is expected to be remanded tomorrow at the Shah Alam Court.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty if convicted.
