Ex-army chief’s wife charged with RM77,000 money laundering

Salwani Anuar, wife of ex-army chief Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, denies four charges of receiving RM77,000 from illegal activities

KUALA LUMPUR: Salwani Anuar @ Kamaruddin, the third wife of former army chief Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, was charged at the Sessions Court today with four counts of money laundering involving RM77,000.

She pleaded not guilty after the charges were read before Judge Rosli Ahmad. Salwani is accused in her capacity as the controller of the company Wany Venture.

According to the charges, she allegedly received proceeds of unlawful activities amounting to RM50,000, RM7,000, RM10,000 and RM10,000, which were deposited into a CIMB Islamic Bank Berhad account under the company’s name.

The offences are said to have taken place at CIMB Bank’s Damansara Heights branch at Wisma UOA II between November 24, 2024, and November 25, 2025.

She was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001), which carries a penalty of up to 15 years’ imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the proceeds, or RM5 million, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Earlier, Hafizuddeain was also charged with four counts of money laundering involving RM2.12 million allegedly derived from unlawful activities.

Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shahruddin Wan Ladin requested bail between RM30,000 and RM50,000 with two sureties, along with additional conditions requiring the accused to surrender her passport to the court and report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Federal Territory office once monthly during the first week.

“The bail proposed is not oppressive considering the serious nature of the offences, and the amount reflects the gravity of the charges. The passport must be handed over to the court as there is a risk the accused may abscond given the serious charges she faces,” he said.

Lawyer Fahmi Abd Moin, representing Salwani, applied for reduced bail on grounds that his client has no fixed income, working only as a housewife who runs an online business while supporting her parents in Besut, Terengganu.

“Her husband, Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, was charged at the Sessions Court today and granted bail of RM250,000. My client is entirely dependent on her husband and lives alone in rented accommodation paid for by him.

“Furthermore, my client has fully cooperated with the MACC throughout the investigation and during the six-day remand period. Therefore, the defence requests bail be reduced to RM20,000, taking into account that the total sum involved is RM77,000. We do not object to the additional conditions set by the prosecution,” he said.
