Man charged for using fake ‘Datuk’ title

A 50-year-old man faces charges for possessing business cards with a fake ‘Datuk’ title, an offence carrying a potential RM500,000 fine or five years’ imprisonment.

SEREMBAN: A 50-year-old man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today for using a fake ‘Datuk’ title from Negeri Sembilan.

Ahmad Zailani Ali pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli.

He was accused of having three business cards bearing the title “Datuk” in a car at the Seremban Gateway carpark on November 25.

The charge falls under Section 3(1)(a) of the Emblems, Awards and Titles (Negeri Sembilan) Enactment 2017.

If convicted, he faces a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.

The court granted him bail of RM3,000 with one surety.

The case was set for mention on December 15 for document submission and lawyer appointment.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nik Nur ‘Aqilah Syarfa Nik Zaidi prosecuted the case.

Lawyer Muhammad Adam Hassan from the National Legal Aid Foundation represented the accused.
