MCMC has secured an Erinford Injunction from the Kuala Lumpur High Court to block harmful content on Telegram’s Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas channels.
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has secured an Erinford Injunction from the Kuala Lumpur High Court to block harmful content on Telegram’s Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas channels.
This legal action forms part of a civil suit against Telegram as a temporary measure pending an interlocutory appeal hearing at the Court of Appeal.
The commission described this ruling as a significant step toward maintaining a safe and responsible digital ecosystem aligned with public interest.
The court specifically prohibited broadcasting harmful content detailed in MCMC’s statement of claim and any similar material.
It also ordered the complete shutdown of both Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas channels along with any similarly operated channels.
The injunction aims to prevent dissemination of false, misleading, and seditious content that could undermine public confidence in national institutions.
The court determined that public interest clearly outweighs private interests in this case.
It found minimal detriment to Telegram compared to substantial damage to national institutions and societal harmony from continued harmful content distribution.
The ruling emphasised that foreign platforms must respect Malaysia’s legal framework and social context regardless of their understanding. – Bernama
