Petronas seeks court clarity on Sarawak petroleum regulations

Petronas files a Federal Court motion to clarify the regulatory framework for its Sarawak operations, naming the federal and state governments as respondents.

KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas has filed a motion at the Federal Court in Putrajaya seeking clarity on the petroleum regulatory framework governing its operations in Sarawak.

The national oil company named the Federal Government and the Sarawak state government as respondents in the application.

It said the move aims to determine the legal position to ensure its continued full compliance with applicable laws and sound governance.

Petronas clarified that the application is not intended to challenge Sarawak’s development aspirations or hinder Petroleum Sarawak Bhd’s (Petros) role.

The decision follows a series of dialogues and negotiations with Petros and both governments since 2024.

“While progress has been made on many commercial arrangements… there have been differences which led to uncertainty,” the company stated.

It cited the signing of a Commercial Settlement Agreement in 2020 as an example of prior progress.

Petronas called on all parties to respect the judicial process and refrain from public commentary.

The company affirmed its commitment to safe, reliable and efficient operations in Sarawak.

It stated that all business activities in the state will continue as usual during the process.

Petronas also pledged to continue strengthening its relationships with Sarawak communities and industries.

It aims to work constructively towards arrangements that advance Sarawak’s aspirations and ensure Malaysia’s prosperity.

The company reiterated its commitment to transparent communication regarding its operations and partnerships.
