PGA detained 116 people, including 52 Malaysians, for illegal border crossings at Sungai Golok since December, with seven hotspots identified
TUMPAT: General Operations Force personnel have detained 116 individuals attempting to cross the Malaysia-Thailand border illegally via Sungai Golok since December last year.
Acting Southeast Brigade commander ACP Ijid Landu Binju said 52 Malaysians were among those arrested during enforcement operations at border hotspots in Tumpat and Pasir Mas.
The remaining detainees included nationals from Thailand, Myanmar, India, China, and Pakistan.
All suspects were investigated under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for using illegal entry or exit routes.
Ijid identified seven primary hotspots for illegal crossings: Gergaji, Abe Yie, Pohon Jambu, Syed Agil, Tanjong, Kuala Jambu and Azizah illegal jetties.
“PGA has stationed personnel at these locations and monitors the area to prevent unauthorised border crossing attempts,” he told reporters after inspecting an illegal jetty.
He warned that strict action would be taken against anyone violating the border crossing ban despite persistent attempts.
Meanwhile, the PGA is expected to receive new Guardian 4×4 Armoured Personnel Carriers to enhance border operations and personnel protection.
The APCs, valued at RM2.67 million each, are undergoing physical testing in operational areas including the Northern Brigade and Kelantan.
Each vehicle can carry a driver, crew member, and six infantry personnel while providing protection against small-arms fire and ambush threats.
Ijid said the new assets would boost personnel morale and create a psychological impact on criminals attempting border breaches. – Bernama
