9 nabbed in Batu Pahat brawl over loud motorcycle engine

PETALING JAYA: A quarrel over a loud motorcycle engine spiralled into a violent brawl at a restaurant in Rengit on Sunday night, leading to the arrest of nine men, including a teenager.

The 10.30pm fight turned the eatery into a battleground as tables, chairs and helmets went flying, according to a viral one-minute video that captured the chaos.

The confrontation reportedly started when one patron, angered by the sound of a revving motorcycle, confronted the rider.

Tensions quickly boiled over when someone toppled the motorcycle, sparking a violent clash among diners, New Straits Times reported.

Batu Pahat district police chief ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani stated that officers arrested nine suspects aged between 18 and 35 about two hours later, around 12.10am on Monday.

“All suspects have been remanded for four days until Thursday,” he said.

Preliminary investigations suggest the altercation began after one suspect repeatedly revved his motorcycle, disturbing patrons and nearby residents.

While no serious injuries were reported, several items at the restaurant were damaged.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a penalty of up to five years in prison, a fine, or both.
