A man’s attempt to steal a RM30,000 gold chain was stopped by a customer and staff at a Paka gold shop, leading to his arrest.
DUNGUN: A brazen attempt to steal a gold chain worth approximately RM30,000 was thwarted by a quick-thinking customer at a jewellery shop in Paka.
The 33-year-old suspect was apprehended at the scene around 12.20 pm on Thursday, according to Dungun police chief Supt Maizura Abdul Kadir.
She said the man, wearing a prayer cap and a face mask, entered the shop pretending to be a potential buyer.
“He then asked an employee to show him a specific gold chain before attempting to flee with it,” Maizura told Bernama.
The employee managed to lock the shop’s automatic doors, preventing his escape.
A customer inside the shop then intervened to physically restrain the would-be thief until police arrived.
Investigations revealed the suspect had used a car registered under his uncle’s name, which was fitted with falsified registration plates.
The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a building.
CCTV footage of the incident had earlier gone viral on social media platform Facebook.
