Engineer Loses RM247,000 in Online Investment Scam in Sibu

Victim duped by fake “Moomoo Malaysia” scheme via Facebook and WhatsApp, warned to verify investments carefully.

SIBU: A male engineer in his 20s suffered losses of RM247,000 after falling victim to a fictitious investment scheme promoted through a social media advertisement, said Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili.

He said that on Sept 1, the victim saw a Facebook advertisement for an investment using the name “Moomoo Malaysia”.  After clicking the link, he received messages via several WhatsApp numbers.

The victim was then added to a WhatsApp group called “New Dream Voyage 5”, which provided explanations about stock investment.

“The suspects also asked the victim to download the ‘WH Group’ application, allegedly linked to Windsor Heritage Capital and Nexi Speak Global,” Zulkipli said in a statement today.

He added that throughout the dealings, the victim did not receive any official documents or written agreements and communicated only through WhatsApp.

The victim made 15 transactions totalling RM247,000 between Oct 20 and Nov 9 to a local account.

He received only one return of RM28,000, which was used to persuade him to continue investing.

After that, however, he was unable to withdraw the promised profits and was asked to increase his investment by RM250,000.

“The victim became suspicious and realised he had been cheated before coming forward to lodge a police report yesterday,” he said.

Zulkipli advised the public to be cautious of high-return investment offers and to verify the legitimacy of companies or websites through Bank Negara Malaysia’s link at www.bnm.gov.my or BNM Telelink (1-300-88-5465), as well as the Securities Commission Malaysia at www.sc.com.my or 03-6204 8999. – Bernama
