Former deputy director arrested for RM35,000 kickback in Penang

Penang MACC arrests ex-deputy director for allegedly accepting RM35,000 bribe from contractor in exchange for tender project award.

GEORGE TOWN: A former deputy director of a government department has been arrested for allegedly accepting a RM35,000 bribe from a contractor.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission detained the male suspect in his 50s after he presented himself at their office to give a statement.

Preliminary investigations indicate the offence occurred in 2022.

The suspect allegedly received the kickback through bank transfers to his personal account and cash payments.

Penang MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.

“The suspect was detained for 24 hours before being released on MACC bail,” he stated.

The bribe was allegedly given in exchange for awarding a departmental tender project to the contractor.
