Four arrested in loan shark harassment case in Kuala Lumpur

Police arrest four men with multiple criminal records for harassing a woman over a Facebook loan offer, now remanded under the Moneylenders Act

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested four men suspected of involvement in a loan shark syndicate’s harassment of a woman.

Brickfields police chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook said the suspects, aged 35 to 47, were detained following a report by a 45-year-old private company director.

The victim responded to a loan offer promoted on Facebook and contacted the suspects via WhatsApp in August.

She made several repayments before being accused of late payment and having additional interest imposed.

The victim then began receiving various forms of harassment and threats from the loan sharks.

Background checks revealed all suspects had criminal records in various districts and contingents.

The first and second suspects each have 17 prior criminal records, while the third has 19 and the fourth has eight.

All four are now under a three-day remand to assist investigation under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951.

Investigation papers are being finalised and will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor soon. – Bernama
