Kuala Lumpur police issue 313,000 summonses in Op PUU crackdown

Kuala Lumpur police issued 313,529 summonses in Op PUU, with traffic obstruction and ignoring signals as top offences, highlighting poor road user compliance

KUALA LUMPUR: Police issued a total of 313,529 summonses for various vehicle offences during the enforcement of Op PUU in the capital from October 1.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus expressed disappointment at the high volume, noting a month-long advocacy campaign was conducted in September before full enforcement began.

“Some 76,000 notices were issued during the advocacy period to ensure the public truly complied with the law, including adherence to the smallest traffic rules,” he said at a press conference.

The offence of traffic obstruction recorded the highest number of summonses at 200,079.

This was followed by ignoring traffic signals with 79,795 summonses and driving without a licence with 8,281.

Other offences included expired road tax (4,847), improperly fastened helmets (1,661), and failure to stop at traffic lights (1,658).

Crossing the white line resulted in 1,433 summonses, while parking on zebra crossings accounted for 797.

Offences involving pedestrians, particularly failing to use pedestrian bridges, totalled 1,346.

Cars accounted for the highest number of summonses at 246,519, followed by motorcyclists with 56,327.

Fadil noted that the statistics indicated compliance among road users remains low, even for basic rules.

“These figures serve as an indicator of the level of compliance with current and future operations,” he said.

He pointed out that selfish attitudes and a lack of tolerance among road users remain widespread.

These were cited as among the main causes of traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur.

As such, Fadil said Op PUU would continue to be implemented in the capital to ensure motorists truly abide by traffic laws.
