MCMC seizes SIM boxes, cards in crackdown on telecoms fraud

MCMC and police seize 50 SIM boxes and 5,000 cards in Kajang, warning misuse for fake accounts and fraud threatens national communications security.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has issued a stern warning over the criminal misuse of telecommunications equipment.

The warning follows an integrated operation with the Royal Malaysia Police in Kajang that resulted in significant seizures.

Authorities confiscated 50 SIM boxes, 5,000 SIM cards and related equipment during the raid.

MCMC stated the devices were being misused to create fake online accounts on a large scale.

This activity was used to bypass digital platform security controls and facilitate fraud and other cybercrimes.

“The misuse of SIM boxes and bulk SIM cards, including foreign SIM cards, enables criminals to create fake accounts to carry out fraud and online crimes, putting users at risk,” MCMC said.

The commission emphasised that such actions threaten the integrity of the national communications network and user safety.

It added that this misuse poses a serious threat to national security.

For offences under Section 239 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, convictions can bring a fine of up to RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both.

MCMC urged telecommunications service providers to tighten SIM card registration controls to ensure digital security.

The commission pledged to continue working closely with police and other enforcement agencies.

This cooperation aims to safeguard national security and prevent the misuse of telecommunications services.

Ensuring compliance with existing laws and regulations remains a key priority.
