Customs in Labuan seized 55 vehicles, including luxury models, valued at RM7.1 million for violating duty-free zone regulations
LABUAN: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department has seized 55 vehicles worth over RM7.1 million in a year-long enforcement operation.
Labuan Customs director Aspaila Ag Tuah said the seizures were made in Sabah and Sarawak from January to December 29.
The vehicles were confiscated for breaching conditions under the Customs Duties (Exemption) Order 2017.
“A total of 55 cases were recorded, with the overall value of the seizures, including tax, amounting to RM7,117,025.23,” she said.
Item 14 of the order allows vehicles bought in duty-free islands like Labuan to enter mainland Malaysia for up to 90 days per year.
Investigations revealed the vehicles were not returned to the duty-free islands after this permitted period.
The seized vehicles included luxury models such as Toyota Alphard, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi Q7.
Other vehicles involved were Toyota Fortuner, Honda, Subaru, and various Perodua and Mazda models.
All cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
Aspaila urged public cooperation to combat smuggling activities involving cigarettes, liquor, and drugs.
“Smuggling leads to revenue loss for the country and poses threats to national security,” she added.
