MACC arrests ex-political secretary, wife in RM3 million graft case

Former political secretary to Melaka chief minister and wife detained over alleged bribes linked to sea reclamation project.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested a former political secretary to a former Melaka chief minister and his wife.

The arrests are linked to an investigation into alleged bribes totalling about RM3 million connected to a sea reclamation project in the state.

A source said the couple was detained at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya today. They were taken in at about 2 pm when they arrived to give their statements.

The suspect, who holds the title Datuk Wira, is believed to have solicited and received the bribes between February and November 2021. The illicit proceeds were allegedly used to purchase a condominium unit in the Klang Valley.

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests when contacted. He said the case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009.

Azam said both individuals will be brought before the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. The commission will apply for a remand order.
