MACC confirm UK cooperation in a RM2.5 billion money laundering investigation linked to IJM Corporation, with two individuals summoned.
KOTA BHARU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is cooperating with United Kingdom authorities in its investigation into a RM2.5 billion money laundering scheme allegedly linked to IJM Corporation Bhd.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the commission is working with the UK’s Serious Fraud Office (SFO).
He said several information requests had been submitted by UK authorities.
“When foreign countries conduct investigations, we must also play our part and provide cooperation,” Azam said at a press conference here.
He stated that no new information has been received, but the investigation is ongoing.
Two individuals have been summoned to give their statements to the MACC.
Azam noted the case is an old one, believed to have occurred in 2015 or 2016.
He said many details need to be obtained before further action can be taken.
The SFO previously launched an investigation into allegations of money laundering and corruption involving billion-ringgit investment transactions linked to the two individuals.
Both are currently understood to be overseas.
The MACC is also probing allegations of share price manipulation.
This is believed to have occurred during Sunway Group’s process of acquiring IJM through a transaction valued at RM11 billion.
Azam added that the MACC will continue aggressive measures to combat corruption and strengthen governance over the next five years.
He said the responsibility to fight corruption does not rest solely with the government.
