Man detained for suspected diesel smuggling, items worth over RM80,000 seized

A man was detained on suspicion of smuggling subsidised diesel to a neighbouring country in Tumpat, with items valued at more than RM80,000 seized

KOTA BHARU: A man was detained on suspicion of smuggling subsidised diesel to a neighbouring country in Tumpat yesterday.

General Operations Force (GOF) Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Ahmad Radzi Hussain said the 49-year-old suspect was arrested with a lorry filled with diesel believed to be intended for smuggling activities.

The operation was conducted jointly by the GOF and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN).

“The suspect was arrested at about 1 pm by the side of Jalan Kampung Simpangan, Tumpat after he was found to have filled up subsidised diesel at several petrol stations around Pengkalan Kubor, Wakaf Bharu and Pasir Mas in a short period of time,” he said in a statement today.

A lorry worth RM80,000 and RM460.80 worth of diesel were also seized.

The case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961.

The suspect, who was found to have used a subsidised diesel card to repeatedly fill up the lorry, was handed over to the Kelantan KPDN for further action.

An inspection of the lorry revealed about 90 litres of diesel and two subsidised diesel fleet cards belonging to a local oil company, he added.
