MCMC seeks TikTok explanation over platform misuse for drug smuggling

MCMC demands TikTok explain platform misuse after drug mule recruitment via fake job ads, citing violations under Communications Act.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has sought an official explanation from TikTok following media reports about platform misuse for drug-smuggling recruitment.

MCMC requested details about TikTok’s internal monitoring and enforcement mechanisms regarding criminal content and fake job advertisements.

The commission stated that platform misuse for recruiting users into criminal activities constitutes a serious offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Section 263(1) of the same Act further requires licensees to ensure their services aren’t used for purposes contrary to Malaysian law.

“Such offers are often used by syndicates to deceive victims into becoming ‘drug mules’,” MCMC warned in a statement.

The public was advised to exercise caution regarding easy job offers on social media, particularly those involving overseas item delivery.

MCMC will continue cooperating with enforcement agencies including the Malaysian Border Control Agency and Royal Malaysian Customs Department.

This cooperation aims to strengthen monitoring and raise public awareness about social media misuse for cross-border crimes.

Yesterday, AKPS director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain revealed four locals were caught attempting to smuggle 86kg of cannabis to Manchester.

The cannabis seizure at Penang International Airport on November 3 was valued at nearly RM8.3 million.

Preliminary investigations found all suspects admitted receiving job offers through TikTok to transport goods while travelling.

The two couples from Johor, all in their 20s, were promised payments ranging from RM8,000 to RM11,000. – Bernama
