Selangor MMEA detains Indonesian-crewed oil tanker for anchoring without permission near Port Klang, citing violation of maritime law.
SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Selangor has detained an oil tanker for anchoring without permission in waters off Port Klang.
The vessel was detained following a complaint from the Port Klang Authority.
Selangor MMEA director Maritime Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the tanker was detained approximately 0.9 nautical miles west of Port Klang.
“The inspection found that the vessel was operated by a captain with four crew members, all Indonesians aged between 21 and 59,” he said in a statement.
He confirmed all crew members possessed valid identification documents.
However, the ship’s captain failed to produce any documents authorising the vessel to anchor.
“Therefore, an offence has been committed under Section 491B(1)(l) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for anchoring without permission from the director-general of the Malaysian Marine Department,” Abdul Muhaimin added.
An arrest warrant has been issued for the ship, and the captain has been taken to the Selangor State Maritime Headquarters for further investigation.
Abdul Muhaimin stressed that the agency will not compromise on any violation of maritime laws.
He reminded all ship operators and owners to obtain proper anchoring permission from the Marine Department.
“MMEA views compliance with the law seriously and strict action will be taken to ensure the well-being and safety of the country’s waters,” he said.
The public can report any suspicious maritime activities via the 999 emergency line or the Selangor State Maritime Operations Centre.
