Police arrested a couple and seized suspected syabu following an hour-long high-speed chase through Melaka.
MELAKA: Police arrested a couple and seized a packet of suspected syabu weighing 0.22 grammes after a one-hour chase in Tengkera here yesterday.
Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Halim Abas said a special team from the District Police Headquarters (IPD) Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department apprehended the 39-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman in a Proton Saga at 7.20 pm.
“At 6.20 pm yesterday, the vehicle driven by the suspects was spotted acting suspiciously near an apartment in Tengkera. When ordered to stop for checks, the driver sped off. The suspect drove dangerously, including against traffic on several main roads in Melaka to evade arrest,” he said in a statement today.
He said the suspects abandoned their vehicle at a dead end near a mosque in Kampung Sungai Putat and tried to escape on foot before being detained. Police found a transparent plastic packet of suspected syabu in the vehicle. Preliminary urine tests on both suspects were positive for methamphetamine.
Background checks showed the male suspect has eight previous records, including seven drug-related offences and one crime case. The female suspect has 11 previous records, including 10 drug cases and one crime case.
“Both suspects have been remanded for four days starting today until Sunday to facilitate investigations under Sections 186 and 279 of the Penal Code, Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987, as well as Sections 12(2) and 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said.
A video circulated on social media yesterday showed three police patrol cars pursuing a vehicle driving against the flow of traffic near the Pantai Hospital intersection in Ayer Keroh.
