Police cripple drug syndicate, seize RM1 million in MDMA powder

Penang police cripple a drug syndicate, arresting two men and seizing RM1 million worth of MDMA powder in Bukit Mertajam raids.

GEORGE TOWN: Police have crippled a drug distribution syndicate and seized Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) powder worth RM1 million.

Two men were arrested in separate raids conducted by the Penang Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department in Bukit Mertajam.

The first raid led to the arrest of a man in a parking lot, where a search of his vehicle uncovered a brown box.

Inside were 271 packets of powder, in various brands and colours, believed to be MDMA with an estimated weight of 6,155 grammes.

Police subsequently arrested the suspect’s accomplice in a nearby area following the initial detention.

Penang Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said intelligence showed the syndicate had been active since last October.

He stated the total amount of drugs seized could have been used by 50,000 people.

Urine tests showed both suspects tested positive for ketamine.

Checks also revealed both men had previous criminal and drug-related records.

The suspects, aged 33 and 41, have been remanded for seven days to assist in investigations.
