Police question China Press editors over King’s speech mistranslation

Police record statements from China Press editor-in-chief and sub-editor over a Facebook post allegedly mistranslating the King’s speech.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded statements from two senior China Press personnel over a Facebook post allegedly containing a mistranslation of a statement by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M Kumar said the daily’s editor-in-chief and a sub-editor attended the session.

The case is being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Section 505(b) addresses statements causing public mischief to provoke fear or anxiety, carrying a penalty of up to two years in prison, a fine, or both.

Section 233 covers improper use of network facilities, with penalties of up to RM500,000 in fines, a maximum of two years imprisonment, or both.

Kumar urged the public not to speculate on the case while the investigation continues.
