Police arrest eight suspects and seize Bitcoin mining equipment in a crackdown on electricity theft in Teluk Intan.
TELUK INTAN: Police have detained eight local men for suspected involvement in illegal Bitcoin mining activities.
The arrests took place around Taman Lagenda following a special operation conducted on November 5.
Hilir Perak District Police Chief ACP Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said officers seized two four-wheel-drive vehicles and 40 Bitcoin mining machines.
The equipment is believed to have been used for stealing electricity.
“Interrogation revealed that all suspects, aged between 17 and 44, admitted to being involved in the activity,” he said in a statement.
Five of the eight suspects have previous criminal records for various offences.
The remaining three suspects have no prior records.
All suspects have been remanded for three days starting today to assist investigations.
They are being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code and Section 37 of the Electricity Supply Act 1990.
On November 6, Bakri announced the bust of an illegal Bitcoin mining operation during a raid at a premise in Taman Lagenda.
The integrated operation was conducted with Tenaga Nasional Berhad and CyberSecurity Malaysia from 2 pm to 6:30 pm on November 5.
Police also seized 66 Bitcoin mining machines, several modems, and supporting equipment during that raid. – Bernama
