Sarawak police intensify online gambling crackdown with system blocks

Sarawak police focus on blocking online gambling systems and cooperate with MCMC to shut down unlicensed operations, says police chief.

KUCHING: Sarawak police are intensifying efforts to block online gambling systems to prevent direct access to such games.

Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said combating online gambling requires new approaches aligned with technological changes.

“The latest trend allows players to access the games directly through their phones, making system blocking the most effective measure,” he told reporters after a flag-off ceremony at the Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters.

He emphasized cooperation with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and Sarawak Digital and Science as crucial for identifying effective methods to shut down unlicensed gambling operations.

Mohamad Zainal pledged to personally inspect any suspected online gambling ‘top-up’ shops in the city that might be attracting players.

Meanwhile, he reminded Sarawak police personnel assigned to Sabah election duty to control their emotions and avoid responding to provocation.

“Control your emotions, avoid reactive actions and always act based on the law and operational directives,” he said.

He noted that every move by police personnel is observed by the public, requiring professionalism at all times.

A total of 903 police officers and personnel from Sarawak departed for Sabah today.

The overall deployment to Sabah comprises 1,031 personnel, with some already stationed there and the remainder leaving today.
