Sarawak police will use SOSMA against drug dealers and syndicate members, targeting entire networks from major distributors to smaller dealers
KUCHING: Sarawak police will for the first time take action under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 against drug dealers and syndicate members in the state.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the move would be implemented as soon as possible, with police currently gathering information and statements.
He emphasised that police will not compromise with any drug traffickers or syndicate members, who were previously mostly arrested under the Dangerous Drugs Act.
“If there is sufficient information and evidence, we will take action under SOSMA,” he told reporters after paying a courtesy visit to Sarawak Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
“This serves as a warning to those involved in syndicate and drug distribution activities.”
He explained that action under this organised crime provision will target not only major distributors but also smaller dealers to dismantle the entire network.
Mohamad Zainal noted that the use of SOSMA is not new, as it has been employed in Peninsular Malaysia with proven effectiveness.
To combat drug abuse in communities, particularly in rural areas, the Sarawak government has provided Instant Visual Drug Detectors to police since last year to facilitate early urine screening.
He expressed confidence that close cooperation between police, ministries and relevant agencies in Sarawak will strengthen efforts to combat drug abuse and crimes involving prohibited substances.
“I see a difference in approach in Sarawak compared to other states, and I am very pleased that much support, especially from the state government, has been given to police,” he said. – Bernama
