Shariah officer, lawyer held in RM91,000 gift deed bribery case

A shariah officer and a shariah lawyer have been remanded for allegedly taking RM91,000 in bribes to issue gift deed confirmations for property transfers.

JOHOR BAHRU: A shariah officer and a shariah lawyer have been remanded for seven days in a bribery investigation involving property gift deeds.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Johor arrested the two men on suspicion of soliciting and accepting about RM91,000 in bribes.

The bribes were allegedly for issuing a ‘hibah’ or gift confirmation order to facilitate a property ownership transfer.

Magistrate Ahmad Khairuddin Khalid granted the seven-day remand order until January 20 at the Johor Bahru Sessions Court.

The two male suspects, aged in their 40s and 50s, were arrested separately yesterday when they appeared to give statements.

They were detained at the Johor MACC office at around 8 pm.

Initial investigations indicate the alleged conspiracy took place between 2016 and 2018.

The suspects are believed to have received cash from 13 recipients of the gift deeds.

Each recipient allegedly paid about RM7,000.

Johor MACC director Hairuzam Mohmad Amin@Hamim confirmed the arrests.

The case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.
