Teenage boy killed, seven injured in eight-motorcycle crash on BKE

An 18-year-old motorcyclist died and seven others were injured in a multi-vehicle collision on the Butterworth–Kulim Expressway early Sunday morning

BUKIT MERTAJAM: An 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed and seven others injured in a crash involving eight motorcycles on the Butterworth–Kulim Expressway (BKE).

The incident occurred at Kilometre 8.2 of the expressway in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Central Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Helmi Aris said preliminary investigations found all the motorcycles were travelling from Seberang Perai towards Kulim.

“A motorcycle is believed to have lost control and skidded, causing the other motorcycles to crash into each other,” he said in a statement.

He added that the collision caused one rider to fall onto the left curb before hitting the divider between the motorcycle and car lanes.

The 18-year-old victim sustained severe head and body injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was sent to the forensics unit of Seberang Jaya Hospital for a post-mortem.

The seven other injured motorcyclists, aged between 18 and 22, received treatment at the same hospital.

Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
