VAT 69 commando dies during Sabah diving training

Police launch a full investigation into the death of a senior VAT 69 officer during a diving exercise off Semporna, Sabah.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police will conduct a detailed investigation into the death of a senior commando officer during a diving training exercise.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the probe will identify the cause of the incident in Semporna, Sabah.

The investigation will include an assessment of training procedures, equipment use, and health and safety factors.

This is to ensure compliance with all regulations and standard operating procedures.

Mohd Khalid confirmed that Inspector Khairil Azhar Kamaruddin from the VAT 69 Commando Unit died during the training.

The officer received emergency aid at the scene before being taken to Semporna Hospital for further treatment.

He was pronounced dead while receiving medical care at the hospital.

All PDRM personnel have expressed their deepest condolences and sympathy to the deceased officer’s family.

The police force prayed for fortitude and strength for the family in facing their loss.

The incident occurred in the waters off Pulau Mataking this morning.

The senior officer lost consciousness while undergoing the diving training exercise.
