Deputy PM Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasises that protecting Malaysia’s environment is a shared responsibility, not just the DOE’s duty
BAGAN DATUK: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has declared that environmental protection is a collective responsibility shared by all Malaysians, not just the Department of Environment.
Speaking at the Perak State Level National Environment Day (HASN) Celebration 2025, he stressed that environmental awareness must extend beyond students to include all segments of society.
“Protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility, not just students but us adults too cannot escape that responsibility,” he stated.
He urged citizens to avoid blaming nature for environmental problems, noting that “all incidents, the destruction of nature are caused by us.”
Ahmad Zahid, who chairs the National Disaster Management Committee, commended Perak’s multi-stakeholder approach to environmental sustainability.
He highlighted that over 71 schools across Perak participated in an e-waste collection competition, gathering a total of 38 metric tonnes.
“Not only that, mosques across the state also responded to this sustainable call, successfully collecting 11 tonnes of e-waste,” he added.
The event also saw the appointment of famous artist Datuk Ahmad Azhar Othman, or Awie, as an environmental ambassador for Perak.
HASN, celebrated annually on October 21, originated from the 1989 Langkawi Declaration on the Environment.
The celebration was previously known as Malaysian Environment Week before being rebranded in 2016. – Bernama
