Deputy prime ministers urge meaningful, moderate Ramadan

Deputy prime ministers call for a spiritually enriching Ramadan, emphasising moderation, charity and avoiding food waste during the holy month

KUALA LUMPUR: The nation’s deputy prime ministers have called on Muslims to embrace Ramadan as a profound period of spiritual growth and moderation.

In separate messages, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof outlined the deeper significance of the fasting month beyond mere abstinence.

Ahmad Zahid described Ramadan as a ‘madrasah tarbiyyah’ to nurture the soul and strengthen piety. He urged the community to maximise every moment for worship, repentance and self-improvement.

“Make the most of every moment of Ramadan to cleanse the heart, improve our deeds and strengthen relationships,” he said in a Facebook post.

He expressed hope that the holy month would cultivate more pious and steadfast servants of God. His message emphasised that the spiritual gains should extend beyond Ramadan itself.

Meanwhile, Fadillah Yusof reminded Muslims that Ramadan’s purpose transcends refraining from food and drink. He said it was a prime opportunity for self-betterment and drawing closer to Allah.

He specifically called for increased acts of charity during this period. Fadillah described almsgiving as a deed that purifies the heart from miserliness and materialism.

The deputy prime minister also voiced concern over a significant spike in food wastage during Ramadan. Reports indicate such waste increases by 15% to 20% in the holy month.

“Ramadan teaches us the meaning of moderation, so purchase breaking-of-fast meals according to necessity, not according to desire, to avoid any wastage,” he advised.

Fadillah concluded his message with a prayer for divine acceptance, forgiveness and guidance for all Muslims. He prayed for strength and blessings throughout the fasting period for the entire community.
