E-invoicing for mid-sized firms postponed by a year

The government has extended the e-invoicing deadline for firms with RM1-5 million sales to 2027, citing high implementation costs and offering a new stamp duty amnesty.

KUALA LUMPUR: The mandatory e-invoicing deadline for companies with annual sales between RM1 million and RM5 million has been extended by one year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the penalty-free postponement, moving the effective date from January 1, 2026, to 2027.

He said the decision was made because many companies cited the high cost of implementing the digital system.

The government has also expanded the sectors permitted to issue consolidated e-invoices.

Retail and building materials are now included in this list.

Separately, a six-month voluntary disclosure programme for stamp duties will run from January 1 to June 30, 2026.

This programme allows taxpayers to come forward and settle any outstanding stamp duty liabilities.

The nationwide e-invoicing initiative, which began on August 1, 2024, is part of efforts to modernise tax administration.

It aims to improve compliance and reduce revenue leakage through digital reporting.
