Elderly driver killed by metal longshaft piercing windscreen in Batu Pahat

A 63-year-old driver died after a metal longshaft from a lorry pierced his car windscreen in Batu Pahat, with his wife and three other passengers in the vehicle.

BATU PAHAT: An elderly driver was killed after his car windscreen was pierced by a heavy longshaft that came off a lorry in a freak incident on Jalan Kampung Sri Bengkal here on Monday (November 24) morning.

The victim’s daughter, Norshahin Juhari, 31, said the horror unfolded when her father Juhari Murid, 63, along with her mother, Zainal Khalid, 58, and three other passengers were headed to Felda Pemanis in Segamat.

Norshahin said she received a call at 9.45 am, informing her that the Perodua Alza her family was travelling in had its windscreen smashed when a metal shaft that fell from the lorry rebounded off the road.

“I was in Muar when I received the call and immediately went to the Forensic Unit of the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital (HSNI) to find out what really happened and to arrange for my father’s autopsy.

“I was utterly shocked when I was told that my father was involved in the incident that took his life,” she said at HSNI on Monday.

She could not hold back her tears, remembering her father’s last request to meet his grandson, Mohd Aidan Rizki Firdaus, who was three months old.

“Yesterday, my father managed to make a video call. He said he missed his grandson and couldn’t wait to see him. They last saw each other last week. I didn’t expect all this to happen so quickly… I couldn’t believe my father is gone. I was supposed to go to my father’s house today. I hope the authorities take appropriate action,” she said.

Norshahin added that her mother was still in shock after witnessing the large piece of metal hit her husband.

Meanwhile, Batu Pahat police chief ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani confirmed the incident and said a detailed investigation was underway. – Bernama
