Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof pays tribute to the late scholar Datuk Dr Madeline Berma, describing her passing as a great loss to academia and national policy.
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has described the passing of scholar Datuk Dr Madeline Berma as a great loss to Sarawak, Malaysia, and the academic world.
He said the renowned economic thinker devoted her professional life to national development and public well-being.
“Her significant contributions, particularly through in-depth research in the fields of economic development, public policy, poverty and social inequality, have greatly helped shape national thinking and policy direction,” Fadillah said in a Facebook post.
He noted her views and research were frequently referenced by both academics and national-level policymakers.
Throughout her service as a professor at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and her leadership at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies, she strengthened the nation’s intellectual discourse.
Fadillah said Madeline had also guided generations of policymakers with knowledge grounded in social justice.
He stated her services, knowledge, and intellectual legacy would continue to live on as guidance for future generations.
The Deputy Prime Minister also extended his condolences to her family.
Madeline Berma passed away at her residence in Bandar Baru Bangi at 11.30 am today at the age of 64.
Her body will be brought back to Kampung Siol Kandis in Kuching for funeral arrangements.
