The last group of MALBATT 850-12 peacekeepers arrives in Subang after completing their UNIFIL deployment in Lebanon amid regional tensions.
SUBANG: The final contingent of Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) 850-12 has returned home after completing its United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.
The 209 personnel landed at Subang Air Base at 5.30 pm today aboard an AirAsia flight.
They were accompanied by seven members of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.
Chief of Defence Force General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar received the returning peacekeepers alongside senior military officials.
MALBATT 850-12 comprised 854 personnel deployed to Lebanon on November 6 last year.
The battalion was stationed at Camp Ma’rakah and Camp Tibnin in southern Lebanon.
Mohd Nizam praised the contingent’s professionalism and commitment throughout their deployment.
He specifically noted their performance during challenges arising from the Israel-Gaza conflict that erupted in October 2023.
“The heightened regional tensions had directly affected the security situation in southern Lebanon,” he said.
Mohd Nizam referenced an incident on November 7, 2024, where six Malaysian personnel were injured while travelling from Beirut to Camp Ma’rakah.
“This is a clear reminder that the responsibilities of a peacekeeping force are never easy,” he stated.
He emphasized that Malaysia’s continued participation in UN peacekeeping missions demonstrates the Malaysian Armed Forces’ credibility and commitment to global peace.
Such missions also enhance Malaysia’s international image while strengthening military capabilities through real-world operational experience. – Bernama
