India’s Modi arrives in Malaysia for official visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins a two-day official visit to Malaysia, with talks on trade, security and new cooperation agreements on the agenda.

PUTRAJAYA: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex here today.

The visit reciprocates Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s official trip to India in August 2024.

Modi arrived at 9.08am and was received by Anwar. The national anthems of both countries were played.

He then inspected a guard of honour mounted by 103 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment.

Also present were several cabinet ministers, foreign diplomats and senior government officials.

Anwar and Modi are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting at the Seri Perdana Complex later today.

An official luncheon will be held in Modi’s honour.

Both leaders are expected to review bilateral relations and explore further collaboration.

Key areas include trade and investment, defence and security, labour, tourism and education.

Following the meeting, both leaders will witness the exchange of several memoranda of understanding.

These cover combating corruption, seafarer training, disaster management and audio-visual production.

They will also witness exchanges on semiconductors, healthcare, national security and vocational training.

An exchange of letters on United Nations peacekeeping cooperation is also planned.

India is Malaysia’s largest trading partner in the South Asian region.

Total trade between the two countries reached RM79.49 billion in 2025.

Malaysia’s exports amounted to RM52.3 billion and imports totalled RM27.19 billion.

Key Malaysian exports are palm oil and electrical products.

Imports from India mainly consist of agricultural, petroleum and chemical products.
