Johor leaders and NGOs lodge police reports over a viral social media post alleged to contain seditious and insulting content against the state’s royal institution.
JOHOR BAHRU: Several Johor state leaders, non-governmental organisations and elected representatives have lodged police reports over a viral social media post alleged to contain extreme and provocative statements insulting the Johor Royal Institution.
Johor Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the reports were lodged together with State Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Khairin-Nisa Ismail @ Md On.
He said the post, which used the name Fahmi Reza, offended the people of Johor and could spark public unease.
“Such actions clearly challenge the principles of constitutional monarchy as enshrined in the Federal Constitution,” he said in a statement.
Aznan stressed that the Malay Rulers’ Institution is a key pillar of national unity, and any attempt to demean it is wholly unacceptable.
He said the reports involved various NGOs, youth organisations, more than 20 Johor state assemblymen and UMNO division chiefs.
This is to enable police to conduct a swift and comprehensive investigation under existing laws, including the Sedition Act 1948.
The viral Facebook post touched on the Johor Royal Institution and questioned the actions of the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail.
The post drew widespread criticism from social media users who condemned the individual’s actions.
Johor police confirmed the case is being investigated by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit at Bukit Aman.
