Johor polls: Islanders see better telecoms as key to daily life

Internet connectivity on Pulau Sibu and Pulau Tinggi has improved significantly with new towers and upgrades, according to residents.

MERSING: “Internet connectivity is much better now, and access is more stable,” said Pulau Sibu resident Ainon Rajab, describing how telecommunications services on the resort island in Mersing, which falls within the Tenggaroh state constituency, have improved over the years.

Ainon, 48, said the telecommunications infrastructure on the resort island has improved significantly following continuous upgrades and investments by the Ministry of Communications and its agencies.

She said the enhanced telecommunications infrastructure and digital facilities on Pulau Sibu have made it easier for residents to communicate and go about their daily lives, as the island is nearly an hour’s boat ride from Mersing Jetty.

“Not long ago, homes further inland had difficulty getting a signal. Whenever the weather turned bad or after a storm, internet connectivity would often be disrupted, leaving residents effectively cut off from relatives on the Mersing mainland,” the sundry shop operator told Bernama in a recent interview.

She said internet connectivity improved significantly following the construction of a new telecommunications tower several years ago, along with other infrastructure upgrades carried out by agencies under the Ministry of Communications.

She said the improved telecommunications infrastructure, driven by initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of Communications and its agencies, including the Johor branch of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), has enabled residents to enjoy wider and more stable network coverage.

“With better telecommunications coverage, our children’s learning has also benefited as they are now able to attend online lessons, including virtual tuition conducted by teachers,” she said.

Echoing Ainon’s views, Pulau Tinggi village head Rossana Hussin, 57, said internet connectivity on the island has improved significantly compared with before, bringing greater convenience to residents.

“Internet connectivity is much better now. The only disruption was about two months ago due to fuel rationing for the telecommunications tower. Alhamdulillah, now, the network has improved,” Rossana said.

Pulau Sibu and Pulau Tinggi, located in the Tenggaroh state constituency, are part of the Sultan Iskandar Marine Park, a protected marine conservation area.

A total of 172 candidates are contesting 56 state seats in the Johor state election, with polling set for this Saturday (July 11).
