The Cabinet refers Kota Bharu MP Takiyuddin Hassan to the Committee of Privileges for scrutiny over remarks made in the Dewan Rakyat
KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet has decided to refer Kota Bharu MP Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan to the Parliament Committee of Privileges for further scrutiny.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the motion tabled in the Dewan Rakyat will be refined to enable the formal referral.
“This decision was made after taking into account the views raised during the debate and to ensure that the MP is given the opportunity to be heard,” she said in a statement.
Azalina added the move would enable the committee to make findings within its mandate under the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders.
“The MADANI government is confident that the Committee of Privileges will conduct this review with full responsibility, independence and integrity,” she said.
She stated the government remains committed to safeguarding Parliament’s integrity as the nation’s highest institution.
The decision follows the deferral of a motion to suspend Takiyuddin from Dewan Rakyat sittings for six months.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul announced the deferral yesterday after a request from Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.
The original motion concerned remarks made by Takiyuddin during a debate on the Supply Bill 2026 on October 22.
Shamsul Anuar said Takiyuddin had spoken about an incident involving the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) at Masjid Rusila in Marang, Terengganu.
He stated the MP linked the incident to the 1985 Memali tragedy and described it as an attack on a place of worship.
Takiyuddin was accused of portraying the event as an attempt to intimidate the public, casting a negative image on MMEA personnel and the public service. – Bernama
