Kuala Lumpur police probe viral MPP extortion claims

Police investigate three reports over viral video alleging MPP members solicited protection money from a Wangsa Maju massage centre.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating three reports linked to a viral video allegedly showing two individuals soliciting protection money from a massage centre.

The individuals in the footage claimed to be members of the Federal Territories Residents’ Representative Council (MPP).

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the case is being probed under Section 385 of the Penal Code for extortion.

Investigations are also being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper content dissemination.

“So far, three reports have been received, and investigations are ongoing,” he said in a statement.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh had earlier instructed for a police report to be lodged.

She demanded an immediate investigation into the allegations involving the MPP members.

Yeoh warned that stern action, including dismissal, would be taken if the claims were proven true.

The viral closed-circuit television footage showed two men introducing themselves as MPP members while asking for money.
