‘Logistics sector key to boosting economic efficiency’

SEPANG: Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the logistics sector of Malaysia is more than just rail or road, it is a powerful, interconnected ecosystem driving national competitiveness.

Speaking at the launch of the Transport Expo Asia 2025, he said the logistics industry must be viewed holistically, covering ports, supply chains, land transport and warehousing, all key to strengthening economic efficiency and regional appeal.

“Logistics is not just about trains or ports. It is about the overall efficiency of our supply chains, land transport and warehousing.

“Malaysia (has potential) when it comes to strengthening this logistics ecosystem.”

He highlighted the recent opening of one of the largest Maersk distribution centres in the Asia-Pacific region, which he officiated at last week.

The smart distribution hub, developed through an investment worth hundreds of millions of ringgit, reflects the growing appeal of Malaysia to global logistics investors.

“This centre is a testament to (our) ability to attract world-class investments.

“It would enhance our logistics index by improving processing, warehousing and delivery efficiency.”

He added that such investments not only elevate the position of Malaysia in global logistics rankings but also deliver long-term gains in trade facilitation, supply chain performance and job creation.

He also said the government is reviewing regulations to make it easier for businesses to operate in order to further strengthen the standing of the country as a logistics hub.

“To attract more investment, we must continuously look at our regulatory framework; how to make things easier and simpler for businesses.

“Easing the way business is done in Malaysia remains one of our biggest challenges and priorities.”

He cited the Public-Private Partnership in Business Regulations Reforms initiative, a government effort to streamline administrative processes and cut red tape, as part of this ongoing commitment.

“The Transport Ministry fully supports this agenda because our role is to enable business, not frustrate it.

“Across all transport sectors, we welcome feedback and will keep pushing to simplify processes.”

Emphasising operational efficiency, Loke said improving logistics performance directly lowers costs and boosts trade competitiveness.

“When you have efficiency, costs go down and you become more attractive for trade and goods movement. Efficiency is the key to staying competitive.”

Addressing concerns from industry groups in the retail and tourism sectors about logistics costs and performance, he said the ministry is working to balance efficiency improvements with wider economic needs.

“If we continue improving efficiency and simplifying business processes, we would not need to worry about our logistics index.”

He added that Malaysia’s logistics transformation is an ongoing journey driven by innovation, collaboration and a focus on making the transport system of the country faster, smarter and more business-friendly.

“We are here to facilitate progress. Our logistics ecosystem is the backbone of trade and growth, and we are committed to strengthening it for the future.”
